I currently work as a Security Guard, ranging from Over night to Evening shifts. While the job itself isn't very hard, we have a HUGE Spider problem. From Jumping spiders to Black Widows. Yes, Black Widows > One of the most venomous spiders in N.A(Key word, one of.)

My boss knows about this, as we've reported it several times. However, during the Overnight shift, I'm suppose to check trailers to see if they have merchandise inside of them. And, it so happens, these trailers are COVERED in spiders+Their webs slings between the bushes behind them to the trailers themselves. This includes the above mentioned Black Widow spiders.

Recently, I decided: I am not walking through those webs anymore. Because if they won't at least spray to kill them off, I'm not risking it. They won't pay my hospital bills if I need medical attention. So, they wrote me up because I won't do it.

That's not legal, right?

Are you SURE they are actually black widows? I feel like most people just assume a black spider is a black widow. Everyone thinks black widows will just kill them on sight. Black widows are no different to any other spider in regards to biting, if they feel threatened they will attack, if you dont bother them and just walk by them youre good.

I dont understand if you know this spider thing was a persistent issue then why would you continue to follow these orders? Why would you have done it in the first place? I dont think its illegal, seems to me that if you were willing to do it the first time why not the 2nd time or the 3rd time?

If you really feel like your life is in danger from this spider case write a letter to a higher up in the company. Call human resources and get it sorted out.

That's part of the job you signed up for. If you think they won't pay your hospital bills, it gets a lot worse for you. Keep doing what you're doing, someone will steal from the trailers and your boss can actually sue you for multiple things from stolen goods to false hours (if you're not doing what your is in your job description and charge them from it, it's false hours).

It's not like they're making you stay there, you can quit if you want but that's the job and it's what needs to be done. Think of all the other FAR more deadly jobs.

It depends if there are literally "Black widows" everywhere and he knows about it then that would probably be illegal seeing as its a health and safety hazard and im pretty sure by law he would have to call pest control.

Honestly if there is no direct danger in doing it just the fact of being in fear then it is more than likely in your job description saying you are going to do things you may not like but legally it's not against the law to have you walk though spider webs unless there is a physical danger in you doing in other words like poisonous spiders or something like that but I agree if you didn't want to do t he shouldn't have made you do it that's complet bull I'm and I would have told him no do it himself haha
