Current specs
CPU: i5 3570k overclocked to 4.2GhZ
RAM : 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3
GPU: GTX 970
Motherboard: MSI Z77a-G45
Storage: 120GB samsung SSD and 1TB samsung HDD
Cooling: hyper 212 EVO
Case: NZXT S340
PSU: Corsair 600w
just looking to see what i can upgrade to keep my pc updated, was thinking CPU and MOBO
spend around 300-400GBP

Your CPU is fine, I'd upgrade the cooler since the 212 EVO isn't very high end, in terms of coolers. I'd also probably add more SSD storage. Case is fine, as is GPU. You could maybe add another 8GB RAM and/or replace the PSU with something better quality. You could add another GTX 970 in SLI, or upgrade to a GTX 1070.
