I'm at Uni and I built a small system for as cheap as I could to take to uni; I simply couldn't move my system from home because I was worried about it's security in the moving van (it's a £2500 rig).

My problem is that I built a dirt cheap system and the CPU just doesn't cut my work loads or isn't the best with gaming, here are the specs:

CPU: i5-4460 (Second Hand)
Ram: 16 GB Hyper X Impact DDR3 (Second Hand)
GPU: GTX 970 (Brand New)
Coolers: A range of Artic Coolers (Second Hand)
PSU: 900 watt EVGA (Second Hand)

I saved money going second hand because I had to build this system a week before leaving and I had no money.

First I may as well tell you what this system is used for, here's a list:

3D Rendering (Not so industrial I need a quadro)
    Program Design and software engineering
    Web Design (PHP, SQL etc.)
    Graphic Design
    Games Design
    Gaming

My question is what CPU I should upgrade too? Would it be wise to upgrade to a i7 - 4790K or maybe a better i5? I want to stay on the LG1150 socket so don't go suggesting a skylake CPU.

My budget is £300 but I can't make a decision, I need some one to help me because as much as for my needs a xeon is preffered but I want to actually play games.. So i7-4790K or something similar?

A 4790k would be a waste if you're not overclocking it. Since you have a locked i5, it would seem that you don't have a Z97 chipset motherboard, so wouldn't be able to overclock anyway. A Xeon E3-1231 V3 would be fine, it's basically an i7 without the iGPU, which you don't need since you have that GTX 970. However, an i5 should be perfectly fine.

Though, I'd make sure there isn't an issue with your i5 first, as it shouldn't really struggle to do any of the tasks you mentioned. A Xeon would be better, but an i5 should be able to handle that.

1: Thank you, but as I said the Xeon isn't what I want as I want too game as well.
2: The i5 doesn't multi-task that well as if I have a project open in visual studio (typically 10 - 20k lines of code) the IDE takes up a space on all the cores and 4 threads just doesn't seem to cut it.

Thank you any way I appreciate it.

As I said, the Xeon E3-1231 V3 is basically an i7-4790 without the iGPU. It does not limit gaming performance in any way. I've owned an i5 before and it handled multi-threaded tasks perfectly fine. It's not a shit CPU by any means. The Xeon's extra 4 threads will obviously help, but an i5 wpuld be fine.

@Loke - stop downvoting posts because you're butthurt m'kay.
