Should i get the GTX 970?
or the R9 390?
they're at a similar price but the R9 390 has more memory, never used a AMD graphics card are they any good?

Thanks

Unfortunately, there is no straight answer. We cannot just say "Here, get this one" straight up.

However we can advise you which card to get, if you provide us with the information Adam has mentioned above. ^

Since you mentioned 2 cards above, let me list some pro's and cons of both cards

970:

Pro's:
- Better Power Efficiency
- Better Drivers
- Less Heat Output (Usually, depends on case/airflow)

Con's:

- Slightly worse performance in some games
- Less VRAM (Doesn't matter if gaming at 1080p)
- Costs a bit more

390:

Pro's:
- Performs slightly better in games
- Usually cheaper than 970 (Model dependent)

Con's:

- AMD Drivers are jank
- Requires more power due to higher TDP

There are more, but without sounding nerdy and listing things that shouldn't factor a buy, I'll leave it there.

Get the 390. It'll perform better at 1440p than the GTX 970, in the majority of games, especially GTA V and The Division.
