There are many things that you may want to assess, just give a good all round visual inspection, note any scratches etc. Take a look at the under body and see if there is any damage. Viewing the car in good light is a good way to check all the body panels match, if any of the body panels look different to the others, that may be because it has been replaced or repainted. it's a sign that the car is rusting or it has been in an accident. The chances are, if one panel has a rust issue, so might the others so be aware of that.

You could also make sure that the car has a spare wheel, some people probably forget this but you should always have one.

When going on a test drive, test to see if there are any clunking noises when turning the wheel, I doubt there will be but just in case.

Edit: Make sure to have a good inspection for any possible coolant or oil leaks in the engine bay.

Fourth generation Volkswagens tend to have their fair share of electrical problems. The 1.8t motors are particularly infamous for bad oil pumps also. If you get any lights on your dash relative to oil pressure failure replace it immediately or you will need a new motor.

My advice would just make sure the swap was done professionally or by someone who really knew what they were doing, also check to see if all the fluid were done on time and timing belt, either way good luck!
