I used to love playing games like clash of clans (going to use as an example here). It's one of the top "free games" on the app store and one of the highest grossing apps as well. The reason why is micro transactions. The game itself is pretty fun at lower levels, but as you get higher and higher the longer it takes for you to upgrade things, produce troops, etc. There are many games like this where you can wait around 5 minutes to 2 WEEKS just for something to finish upgrading/building. Now if you don't want to wait, you can buy gems to speed things up. It starts off where $5.00 can upgrade around 5-10 buildings/troops instantly at lower levels then as you get higher $5.00 doesn't even do anything and you have to start buying the more expensive packs if you want to get those instant upgrades again.

The penalty of not buying these in-app purchases is having to wait. Games like this suck ass because it forces players to grind for coins (or whatever) just to upgrade one thing. It takes a day or two just to get the gold/elixir and then anywhere from a day to TWO WEEKS for ONE thing to upgrade (at higher levels). The wait times for these games is just way too unreasonable. You shouldn't have to wait to play a game; it just doesn't seem right. Players should have the freedom to play.

Now I understand Devs do this to make money but it shouldn't be like this. At least in games like COD or Halo, you're able to buy DLC and other things if you want and not doing so doesn't affect the gameplay. Micro transactions should not delay or prevent you from playing a game.

Mhmmmm well I mean it is a free mobile game so they have to make money somehow and honestly waiting on things to build isnt really a huge issue. If the game just made everything build instantly you would have huge balancing issues and the payment is optional. It doesnt make the game unplayable, you just have to manage your time better.

In games on PC/consoles I still dont find micro transactions to be a bad thing as long as they are not game breaking.

Main reason why I quit playing CoC. It wasn't difficult for me to gain loot but I also got to the point where every upgrade had 1-2 week to finish. So I ended up having to raid every single day to keep up my loot for the next upgrade. Not necessarily a bad thing, but that doesn't fit my playstyle.

I agree with Jiro that it's a free game and they need a method for making money. CoC does it right. Unlike Candy Crush where they give limited amounts of play time and force you to stop unless you buy more passes.

This is such a problem when playing mobile games and is also why i tend to stay away from them.

Games usually let you play for a while and then you have to wait HOURS for like a regen or something.

Warframe is the king of this. Waiting for hours or a day for a new weapon or warframe.

I agree with this. I am fine with devs getting money for there game that they made, but at some point it becomes too over bearing on the player.

You get hit with the need to buy things to level up faster, because it gets to the point where you can't do anything without it. This is not fun to me. Most of the time the wait takes so long that I'll just move on to a new game.

I would rather have a one off fee to be honest. I don't see the need for micro-transactions AND ads. One of them is sufficient enough to support a game. In most games that have transactions you still get ads even after PAYING for something in the game. I don't agree with that.

Micro-transactions are becoming such a big thing that even AAA titles are starting to add them. Call of duty and halo have both moved from the good 'ol fashioned was of taking time to earn cool armors and camos to making them drop at random REQ packs or Supply Drops that take longer than they should to earn by playing. AW was so bad with this random drop system that there were guns and weapon types that I didn't even see.

These need to go away from games.

TL:DR:
Micro-transactions are a parasite that create an addiction, or need to buy them in order to advance in games. Companies should choose between ads or transactions, not both.

It seems that almost all games today are pay to win or pay to play. It honestly sucks that games have to always include micro-transactions.

Yeah in the past i've had so many issues with games where you have to upgrade/mod cars and to do another race i would have to wait like 24 hours...

I'm not really sure if it counts as micro-transactions, but the biggest disappointment I've ever had over a video game was for Elder Scrolls Online. I purchased the Imperial Edition, because usually the limited edition version comes with digital content.. Like a season pass or something. All it did was 'unlock' the ability to use the Imperial Race. Next thing I know, all the really cool DLC that was coming out costed extra money. I already paid $100 for this game, and now they wanted extra money for something as simple as horse armour. Completely ridiculous. Haven't played the game since the day I bought it. I should have sold it that day. Sadly I still have it, and I won't get anywhere near what I paid for it.

I believe this to an extent. Some games give players unfair advantages for micro transactions.
