Hey,

A few years ago I heard that you didn't need an antivirus for Mac's, how about now? I recently got a Macbook and I'm curious to think if I actually need one? I only download a few things on it, (such as music, pictures etc.) but that's about it.

Also if you do think I should install one, what decent FREE antivirus would you recommend me picking up?

Thanks

It is honestly very difficult for Macs and Apple OS X devices alike to get a virus of any kind. If you really feel that you need antivirus the one that I would recommend is [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . However, I personally wouldn't get an antivirus.

I've never felt the need to run an antivirus on my macbook. Had it for over a year with no problems now.

YES YOU DO.

You need security software on any internet connected devices.

I guess I should elaborate especially seeing as the above posters are telling you not to get one. Historically Mac devices haven't been targeted due their low use in business and industries where data breaches can mean that hackers can steal millions worth of personal data and actual cash. These days hackers know that even if not as many people use Mac's, they'll likely be relying on no security software and therefore are a weak link.

So why is that a problem? Well if your Mac is compromised and sits on a network with no security bar the wireless encryption then hackers can use your computer as a staging point for directed attacks on Windows machines. This is the reason why many companies who push "Bring your own devices" programs offer free antivirus to their employees which is paid for.

I would recommend you get something like Bitdefender or Kaspersky. Both are rated very highly this year and also offer multi-device support so you can get three license packs cheaply and protect your PC, Mac and Phone all in one.

Like yes, everything is hackabke and able to have a virus planted into it.

But dude, I wouldn't even really bother, as long as you don't hit places like the dark web and just stick to the usual you'll be fine with no security protection

You don't have to go to malicious sites to get malware just so you know. It can be delivered via adverts which have been compromised, or by people you know who have had their systems hacked.

TL:DR: Protect everything, assume the worse and trust no one
