I passed my UK driving test 2 days ago ( YAY! ) and iv'e just bought my first car a little Peugeot 206 1,1L.

However im finding now im nervous as hell when driving on my own to the point i dont really want to go out and drive! any tips on building confidence?

Also my clutch feels strange in this car and is nothing like what i learnt to drive in (Brand new Ford Fiesta) my clutch on the 206 comes up REALLY fast however in some places seems to go slack and slow down which is causing my to stall which im finding really embarrassing especially when im in a queue of traffic

So any tips on building confidence and getting used to a new car is much appreciated!

Thanks

If you want to build confidence in driving on your own, the best way is to probably just drive more. Congrats on passing btw

Take it to an industrial estate when all the companies have closed/gone home and just practice clutch control. Even take a parent with you to help you understand what you are doing wrong or what you can adjust.

Practice stopping and starting, all cars are different and some have very light clutches compared to others. I'm trying to adjust coming from a Land Rover Defender to a little Citroen C1.. The clutch is so hard to get used to on the C1

Good luck though

Thanks guys once im moving im fine! its just pulling away stalling is really hammering my confidence especially because i only stalled once during 25 driving lessons and other road users beeping me when i make a mistake are really also getting to my confidence!

Only my first day or driving today D:

If you have taken your L plates off, I would put them back on to let other drivers know that you are still kind of learning. When they do beep though, just take your time and do not rush. Rushing it will just get you further into a pickle.

But definitely just find either a quiet road or industrial estate to get used to pulling away then. Even little estates will hills to practice your hill starts.

P plates would be best imo, shows people that you are new but not a learner so they know you may still make a small mistake.

Congrats, would have to say no to the P plates as people will take advantage of you if you use them. For confidence just go out at time when the roads will be quiet and work your way up to normal times.

The clutch is going to feel different. On the 206 the clutch has probably done a good few miles, they wear out. Just a case of getting used to the biting point of the certain car.

Good luck

Driving on the same route you took when you were learning is also a good way. You know the roads, you know the place. So it will just get you used to the new car.

Thanks for all the replies guys managed a trip to work and back today about 5 miles each way without stalling woo!;)

It's a steep learning curve for sure, everyone is right! the learning truly begins after you pass your test!
