That's happening because you are either hitting the ball too hard at the player and they are miss touching it or you are holding sprint while you go for the ball and they miss touch it.

It happens during kick offs too so I don't understand how this is possible

The way to make your passing better is to focus on passing the way your player is facing, playing the ball with enough power and not using too much power as that can mess up the first touch. If this is happening randomly then it may be due to you holding your analog stick the way you pass was intended after the pass has been received which will make the game think you want our first touch that way.

You must be hitting the pass button to much, happens to me

Might be ur controller was having same issue and I tired a different controller solved issue
