EazyE- wrote Let's think realistically if there was a meteor that was going to wipe out the earth in a week that's bigger than the moon wouldn't we see it?

There is a lot of sky to survey and distant objects appear smaller. How much of the sky can be monitored and at what level of detail is an engineering question I can't answer.

But if it was supposed to wipe out the earth wouldn't it be bigger than the moon. Then therefore we would see it coming if it was a week away

I don't know what kind of mass and velocity an object would need to kill a planet. A bullet isn't very big, but it's fast and can hurt you. A car doesn't need to go very fast to hurt you. I would assume a smaller and faster object would be more dangerous to earth because it might be detected later and give less time to react.

Yeah reading it like that I have a different interpretation on the matter now. It's all about the knock on effect. tsunamis, earthquakes etc.

Well the meteor which wiped out the dinosaurs was about the size of New York [if all of those documentaries I watched as a kid were correct.]
It wouldn't be hard to see humans being wiped out, or at least being reduced by a significant number in the event of that happening again.

Like we could trust nasa? They wouldn't just say their is going to be an asteroid hitting the earth that would cause mass panic around the world we will just have to wait and see.
