Awhile back, I bought a iPhone 5c from a friend to use as an iPod for the time being, he left his iCloud account because he didn't know the password, now I'm looking to factory reset the phone, is there any possible way to do this without knowing the iCloud account password?

No. There would not be a point in having it if it was able to be removed.

Either take the device to your nearest Apple corporate store and show them proof of ownership to get them to remove the lock for a fee of I think $5-10 USD...

OR

Lay it on your papers and allow it to become a very expensive, shiny paper weight.

I dont know where you are from but i am from the uk. My best friends uncle bought a phone off of ebay, and it was not reported stolen before you ask! He took it into the Apple store and showed them the listing on ebay. they checked it over and then they took the icloud account off and then factory reset it for him.

Once its iCloud locked there is nothing you do about it unless it was originally yours. If you look online you can see that people sell them with the iClould lock. I would assume the people who buy them buy them for the parts since they get them really cheap
