I am level 31 and still yet have found an exotic weapon or piece of armor, I am willing for anyone to come my way and ask me on how to get an exotic or teach me how, it would help a lot thank you.

Easiest way of obtaining them is by doing nightfalls or purchasing them with strange coins from Xur.
Xur only comes Friday and Saturday at random locations in the tower or reef.

If you haven't done your first Prison of Elders (Need the HoW DLC) yet it will give you a guaranteed exotic.
