Do you have the hdmi/dvi plugged directly into the graphics card instead of the motherboard?

I have it plugged into the motherboard. My friend told me to try my graphics card but I need to get an adapter first

You need to plug it into your graphics card, the only reason to plug it into mobo is to use a CPUs integrated graphics

From experience when you plug it into either one it should work and display screen its just that you need to install your GPU drivers and make sure your HDMI or whatever is plugged into the GPU. But either one should display a screen so it should not be that. I dont know what else I could tell you... Maybe try a VGA instead of HDMI or HDMI instead of VGA?

That is because the cpu has an igpu and from what I can tell op's doesn't. OP just incase can I have the specs of your rig?

the only thing I haven't tried is plugging a DVI cord into the graphics card, im going to buy one tomorrow which I think might fix it. But shouldn't it have still worked when I plugged a VGA or HDMI cord into the motherboard just to see if everything is working?

No it won't
"But either one should display a screen so it should not be that"
as soon as a GPU is plugged into the motherboard it cancels IGPU so you have to plug it direct into the card... You should have worked that out from your "experience"
