If your phone is usable and you want to restore your phone, there's no need to put it into recovery mode.

Just hit the restore (or Shift + Restore if you're manually selecting an .IPSW) button in iTunes and everything will be automatic.

When the restore is done, your phone will be turned on and will be at the Welcome screen.

But I think what you're trying to say is that once the recovery starts, iTunes will automatically close your phone? If that's the case, then yes.

It has to extract the firmware first and verify with Apple. When I said iTunes turns off your phone, I meant to say restart.

iTunes will restart your phone, it will say it's in recovery mode for a few seconds on your phone and then the actual restore process will start. You'll see a progress bar on your phone, too.
