I'm still fairly new to the PC building world so please don't judge so harshly. I was looking around for a CPU upgrade and was just wondering, would an i5-4440 be better than an i3-4150, it'll probably seem like a stupid question but the 3.5 GHz vs 3.1 GHz threw me off.

The i3 has 2 cores and 2 threads whilst the i5 has 4 cores, if you can afford it get the i5 ignore the ghz. The i3 is better performance for money but the i5 simply out performs it.

What GPU, MOBO, CPU, PSU have you got? And what's your budget for upgrades?

Also what is the computer being used for?

That's what I was thinking, thank you.

I just recently built this but a faulty i3 came in and is currently in the return process, I thought I'd just shed the extra $50 for an i5,

My current GPU is an XFX DD R9 270, MOBO is a Biostar B85S3+, current CPU is a Celeron G1820 due to what happened with the originally planned CPU and my PSU is a Fractal Design Tesla R2 500-Watt.

I have about $150 to basically just upgrade the CPU since my current one is bottlenecking my GPU.

The i5 is very good, I personally have an i7 4790k, and that would beat a i5 obviously.

i3 won't bottleneck your GPU. You have a mid ranged GPU so an i3 will be fine, but if you can get the i5, go for it. The 4 cores will be a benefit. Keep in mind, games like Tomb Raider and GTA V show little to no benefit from the extra 2 cores, but games like FC4, AW and what not, do.
