Dallas sniper attack: 5 officers killed, suspect identified

The ambush began with gunshots that killed five officers and sent screaming crowds scrambling for cover. It ended when a Dallas police bomb squad robot killed a gunman after negotiations failed.

Investigators have identified the dead suspect: 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson of Mesquite, Texas. But they're still trying to answer key questions. Chief among them: Was anyone else involved in the shootings, which began Thursday night during a protest against police violence and left parts of downtown Dallas under siege for hours? And are other suspects on the loose?
The deadly gunfire erupted in Dallas as videos showing two African-American men shot by police in Louisiana and Minnesota spurred protests and debate over police use of force across the country.

Patrick Mumford was sitting in his own car in February, 2016 when he was confronted by three Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Officers, who were serving a warrant for another man, Michael Clay.

The lead officer confronts Patrick but does not believe Patrick when he truthfully identifies himself to the officer, twice. Patrick rightfully asks the officers what is the matter and to see the arrest warrant they say they are serving.

Fearful and confused, Patrick retreats into the passenger seat of his car. Within 38 seconds of his initial introduction to the officers, the lead officer is ordering Patrick to be tased for non-compliance.

It takes a violent use of force for officers to realize what we already know: they have the wrong guy.

Rather than apologize, the officers rationalize and justify their actions to horrified neighbors and even Patrick's parents. These rationalizations include the repeated false statement that the officers asked Patrick for his ID.

Patrick is arrested for obstruction. As a non-violent drug offender serving in a first-offender probation program, a pending probation violation could cost him his job, his college education, and seven years in prison: all for sitting in his own car, minding his own business, and telling the truth.

Despite the fact that this officer is lying on camera there will still be people defending him.
If the officer was in the right then why would he need to lie? Even he knows he was in the wrong.

Isn't it just brilliant how, even after they find out that it isn't the right guy, they still keep him pinned to the hood of the police car in cuffs?

Seems we have another one again. Two male police officers who are unable to disarm a small woman holding a tiny pair of scissors, so instead they shoot her.

A Navajo woman who was shot dead by a police officer in Arizona, sparking protests, was carrying medical scissors as she approached him, body camera footage has shown.

The shooting of Loreal Tsingine, 27, in March, led tribal officials to urge the US Justice Department to investigate the treatment of Native Americans who live in towns that border the reservation.

Footage of the 30-second encounter in Winslow however has been made public after a ruling that officer Austin Shipley was justified in shooting her because he feared his life, and that of a colleague, were threatened.

It appears to show Tsingine resisting arrest and being thrown to the ground, where her belongings spill out of her purse, including a prescription for Aripiprazole, an anti-psychotic medication.

After she is thrown to the ground, she gets back up and approaches the officer with medical scissors. It is at this point that he shoots her, with his partner scrambling out of the way.

The audio then kicks in, where he can heard breathing heavily, tell his partner: 'She came at me with those scissors'. He then appears to wretch.

My problem is why does it have to be labeled "black man" why not African American male?

For the same reason it isn't "European-American male" when talking about a white guy. Our family lines have been here for generations, so there isn't much reason to keep the continent/country origins in the description. I wondered the same thing before, but I learned a bit about it when group of black students at my school said that they are just Americans and really have nothing to do with Africa. Makes sense, especially since we white people don't usually go with our continent or country.

Did you guys hear about the shooting of a black male in Tulsa a few days ago? Surprised I haven't seen anything on here posted about it.

An unarmed black man walks on a Tulsa, Oklahoma, road with his hands in the air. Police officers follow closely behind him as he approaches his vehicle. He stands beside the car, then falls to the ground after one officer pulls the trigger.

Now 40-year-old Terence Crutcher is dead. Crutcher's sister is demanding that prosecutors charge the officer who shot him. And the police videos of the incident are fueling criticism about the case.
