Curious if anyone on the site has ever told a little lie when writing a CV?.

Reason I ask is my nephew is 17 and has hit that horrible part of life where he now has to find a job. He failed his way through school so has no qualifications and the only work experience he has was for 2 days in a retail store (Curry/PC world).

Would it hurt to exaggerate a little on his CV when it comes to education? obviously not to the point of him being a rocket scientist, just something that doesn't make look like an idiot. As for his work experience, editing the dates up from 2 days to say 20 days. The job he's applying for is part time 13.5 hours a week in a local store (Home Bargains) so I can't see it requiring mad skills considering all he would be doing is pushing buttons on a till.

When you mention "lies" what are you actually referring to? Grades? Or just the part where you're increasing the days for the so called work experience.

I must admit, i have told a few "porky's" on my CV when it comes down to job experience.

You'll be fine if that's the only alteration you're making. Don't go over the top and start putting A* on subjects which in reality he got an F

There would be a limit to when it comes to the lying I would say. Most people would lie to an extent on a CV to get a job. A mate of mine actually said that he played football just so he could blabber about team working and communication and he has never played the sport. He got he job. So yeah I would say it would Ok to lie to an extent to make yourself look good.

I wish him success for the job

Yeah, i agree. Managers love to see those who have experience in working in a team and when necessary working independently with ease.

Make sure you mention you're flexible with times!

Just don't lie about information they can easily obtain, even then if you're a good worker I don't think they'll fire you.

Im not sure what a CV is but im sure its a job application. In America it is very easy to find out if someone lied on an application or not. However, some employers do not follow up so they don't know if you did or not. If you are applying to a big position within a company or any type of job that gets you a high salary they will check your background and call previous employeer's to see how you worked and to verify that you worked. I use to work in the office back in school and I would always answer phone calls from college's and companies asking to verify a persons Diploma.

Both really. The work experience part is simple enough to change but the grades part is a little tricky. Being that he didn't even attempt to take the tests he really doesn't have anything, so I'm thinking C in English and D in Maths sounds reasonable for you average teenager. I'm assuming basic English and Maths is all that's needed when it comes to retail work.

As you've probably gathered I've been stuck with this stupid task anyone got any suggestion on what to write for the whole "Personal Statement" thing? I'm terrible at these things

Glad I didn't have to write a CV. what ever happened to a basic job application that just fill out a couple questions. stupid over complicated things

Every one stretches the truth a little on a c.v. The trick is not to go too far. You have to make it believable and know what you put down in case you get asked some awkward questions. Good luck

well, if they are desperate i guess it is a little ok, but i wouldn't lie, if they find you out it could affect your future career.
