Not to be that guy but this can kinda boil down to a simple dependent on the individual and how they manage their time.

Me I use 20 mbs internet but I have a computer/Xbox setup. While downloading things on PC I play games on xbox or the other way around. I dont notice a drop in game play change or download speed change to be honest.

Maybe not the best explanation but that's how I look at it. I used to game on 1 mbs internet believe it or not and sure it would take me 9 hours to download 5 gb or whatever crazy amount of time but I managed my time well and did not really pay attention to the internet speed.

I realize that people are not forced to wait and you can manage your time and do something else while it is downloading. What I mean is that you hear about things like Google Fiber, which is 1 Gb/s, and I was just thinking at what point is it just totally useless to offer a higher speed because the speed that you already have can download something in 1 sec and the next step up can download it super fast as well, so fast that there would only be a few milliseconds difference. See what I mean?

It will always become faster and better.

Just imagine how insane 1gb would be.. I'd just buy a terribite hard drive just to download so many things so fast

There are lots of factors to take into account.

If you're streaming video from YouTube, for instance, you would notice no difference from greater speed if you were able to watch the video from start to finish at the quality and resolution you want with no buffering or delay. Exactly what speed that will be depends on the content of the video, how compressible it is, the resolution you choose, the frame rate, etc.

A game would behave differently because the time that packets take to travel to their destination becomes much more important. The fewer "hops" between your computer and the server, the quicker the response should be. If you play an online game that has servers in Texas, moving to Texas can reduce latency.

For downloading large files, you will be limited by how much bandwidth the server hosting the files is willing to let you use. If it's not as fast as your connection to the internet, then you will be limited.

If you have an extremely fast connection and you are not limited by any other factors, the write (or read on the other end) speed of your storage will limit how fast the file can be written or read.
