I beat the Dead Kings DLC the other day and something it's had me thinking ever since...

I beat the Dead Kings DLC the other day and something it's had me thinking ever since...
Al Mualim died at the end of Assassin's Creed and Altair burned his body, yet Arno has the Apple of Eden delivered to Al Mualim in Cairo at the end of Dead Kings.
How is this possible?!
Did the Apple of Eden allow Al Mualim to travel through time, or did he have another Piece of Eden that allowed it and/or kept him alive this whole time???
