I know that you get a free performance boost and what not, but is it actually noticeable? I doubt that there would be much difference when gaming or just day to day use. So when would it come in handy other than running really CPU intensive programs (which I can't think of many)?

All depends on what your planning on doing with your computer. The majority of people that know what their talking about all say its better overclocked. If your paying money for a CPU you might aswell use it at its full potential ?

But is it's full potential noticeably different to it's original clock speed?

in all fairness the
advantages are
- bit more speed in general applications and access times
higher fps (only by like 1-5)

disadvantages are

higher temprature
less stability if oced too much

in my opinion its not worth it as it doesnt make a huge diff. but its up to you.

Depends on how good you are with it and what spec your system is. For example a dual core Pentium loves overclocking to flex its muscle on those big Haswell cores and it doesn't throw out much heat. On the other hand, a lot of people overclock i7's but they are powerful already so it depends what you want. Normally you can get a good performance boost with not much temperature increase.

Would you say overclocking an i5 4690k is worth it? Considering the slight temp increase and the added cost of an aftermarket cooler and fans?

Well if you have a Z series motherboard already then yes. You can test out overclocking on relatively cheap coolers and if you like it then you could move up to a high end air system for about 60GBP.

Is it worth it...
I tested this a while back with Cinibench 14.
Standard FX-6300 at 3.5GHz I got a score of 477. However at 4.4GHz I got a score of 582. It definitely seems worth it to me

Would those scores translate into a noticeable/worthwhile performance boost?

for me they did in the sense of a few more fps in CPU heavy games, and everything just seems a bit nippier than standard clock.
However, Overclocking is just a way to show off and see who has the biggest epoon.
