Hey, my friend is running a decent computer already but it has a few weaknesses. Currently it has some good parts and some bad parts.

MoBo- 760GM P23 (one of the weaker parts)
PSU - 600W bronze (unsure of model however it's had faults)
Cpu - FX 8350
Gpu - AMD Radeon R9 280x
Cooling - H55 corsair water cooler
RAM - 2x8 corsair vengeance

He wants to swap his 280x with a 780 Ti and he's already ordered a 650w gold xfx to sort out that psu problem. I know he should really consider swapping his motherboard however he isn't physically capable of taking it all apart. So the question is, do you think using this build, you could slot in a 780 Ti?

Many thanks.

Does he really need to upgrade GPU? Will he make use of the extra performance? In any case, a GTX 970 would be a wiser purchase than a 780 Ti.

I was telling him to consider this 970, he probably wouldn't utilise the full capability of the 780 Ti so if you reckon the 970 would be the better option I'll tell him.

Thanks again.

The GTX 970 pretty much matches the performance of 780 Ti. The 780 Ti performs slightly better, and I mean a very small difference, but the 780 Ti is more expensive and less power efficient than the GTX 970. Although, if there's no need for him to upgrade, he could spend the money on other components instead. If he's playing on a 60Hz 1080p monitor, I can't imagine the 280x would be struggling in any games.

Currently he's on a 1 monitor set up but he does plan to set up an extra 2 monitors, I know he should consider upgrading his motherboard however for him considering I can't help him as he lives in London and all his other friends are wastemen I can't see it happening. After having all of these good quality parts it is a shame to have such a low to mid level mobo.

Another thing, currently (his pc is a vibox submission) he has issues when booting up games and occasionally whenthe pc is idle. He's reported the screen flickering, often blacking out and sometimes saying no signal. He's also said his keyboard and mouse occasionally jib out and flicker, making me think its due to his psu being a vibox psu however I'm starting to believe it may be the gpu. He's got all the up to date drivers etc, what could the problem be?

PSU needs upgraded asap. Connection issues could be caused by loose or faulty cables. I'm honestly not sure how well a triple monitor set up would run on a 280x, but the GTX 970 will easily hand 3 monitors.

Thanks for the really fast responses, as I thought it was likely the psu. Luckily his xfx 650w gold is set to arrive tomorrow and he's considering getting the 970 and selling me the 280X so I can replace my current 2GB Windforce OC 270X. Think the upgrade is worth 100 pound? 100 quid for his 280x to upgrade my 270x? Cheers

Entirely up to you. You can get a brand new 280x for around £180., or a 280 for £150 which can be overclocked to the standards of a 280x. It's up to you whether you feel you want/need an upgrade and if you think it's worth the price.

His 280x isn't very old, and for 80-100 pound I think it's worth it. His exact gpu is 200 - 220 pound I believe (3GB 280x Direct CU II ) so for me I think it's a bargain. However would the upgrade be noticeable and worth it, you tell me. Would the 280x be much more powerful than my 270x?

I've also been pondering, If I swapped my motherboard to one which was crossfire compatible, would I be able to xfire my 270x with this 280x? I don't know if that's viable. Cheers.

The 270x and 280x are based on different arhitectures so cannot be run in xfire. It's either one or the other. If it were me, for £80, I'd take it but at £100, I'd have to think about it since it's slightly used and not a huge step up from the 270x. I think in games, the 280x will give an 8-14FPS boost on average. Although, there isn't much point if your 270x handles your games as well as you'd like it to.
