Currently, I am using Photoshop CS6 which I believe is the most up to date version of photoshop.

You can do fine with Photoshop CS5 or above. The difference between CS5 to CC are hardly noticeable. I've had every version, and I'm now using with CC. CC feels no different from CS6, and outside of a 3D platform, CS6 is no different from CS5. It's almost like iPhones.

The most up to date version of Photoshop is CS6 Extended.

Extended has that of the other versions, plus the capability of 3D modeling.

Edit: I personally use CS6 Illustrator more so than PS.

I'm quite new but I also use Illustrator I've been told that that is better for editing text and doing things like lines and vectors (not sure if this is true). But it works for me so I like it.

I'm using CS6 Extended but whenever I see tutorials for Photoshop, a majority of them have CS5 and the features I use are also in there.

Photoshop CC is the most up to date version on Photoshop.

Photoshop is a raster based program, which means it deals with pixels. Illustrator is a vector based program which uses mathematical equations to produce vectors (or points) for computer graphics. The difference is Photoshop is best for work that isn't going to be scaled to different sizes on a multitude of platforms or print. So yes, Illustrator would be better for text and geometric shapes.
