I recently brought Norton and my friend said it was dumb of me buying it as its terrible, it slows down you computer, blocks most sites and gives you viruses.

Is it true what he said?
Any other good virus protectors, i can use instead of Norton?

Nine_Sliber wrote That's incorrect, Norton is really good it's just picky and will find anything with "Low Rep" and claim it's a virus.

Norton was a horrible resource hog a while ago and it got a bad rep from that which stuck, I haven't touched it since 2004 because of it.

Keep it for now. If you bought it then your just going to waste your money not using it. After that though, get Malware Bytes and some other free anti-virus. You shouldn't need Anti-virus anyway if you don't click links that you don't have a clue about or download crap.

These are both true. I used to use Norton and I never had any issues with it hogging resources. However, just like Nine said, it marked almost everything I downloaded as suspicious, which made regular use a major pain.

tldr it's fine.

Norton does hog resources for me, and then regularly blaims other processes for the hogging (normally google chrome) which I can't say I appreciate. However, I promise you won't get a virus with Norton. It does both an in depth virus AND community scan. Not even Silent Drive bys (that don't exist anymore, I know) could get passed norton simply because of the reputation scan. In my opinion it is the best anti-virus if you are serious about protection and use your own methods to keep yourself safe. The only con, like I said, is the resources that it uses. Look at the image below to see what I mean, this is the CPU usage during a standard scan on my PC.

You can counter that by putting norton on silent mode or disabling automatic scans which I normally do as malwarebytes is a better scanner than norton anyway.
