It seems that all squads have a big weakness this year. Here is my opinion on how some of the more popular sides will fair:

In the past Spain were terrifying but seem to have lost a little bit of their edge and fear factor after being gubbed 3-0 at the Confederations Cup. Obviously they are amongst the teams with a chance to win it. Will definitely be featuring at the later stages of the competition.

Germany are lacking in a real striker. They are relying on Klose after all of these years and let's face it that he is old and not a player who you would want to depend on for goalscoring. Of course what they do have is a strong midfield and a very good, maybe a bit too over-confident(Well they do say that the best goalkeepers are nutters), goalkeeper.

Brazil also seem to have the problem of not having the greatest strikers. Fred is hardly going to carry you far. Not to mention that their midfield is far from the best. Being the home nation and a decent side will mean that they will be in the later stages. I just don't see the big hype which the side is given and feel that they can be beat by many of the teams this year.

Argentina are going to rely on basically outscoring every other team as they are not a team with a defence that could be called world class. Argentina will get out of the group and probably past the first knockout round. The success of their tournament relies on the form of Aguero and Messi. Obviously it relies on Messi more but like I said Argentina need to hope that the attackers are in top form so they can outscore.

The Netherlands appear to have a very young squad this year and I think that there is too much inexperience. They will escape the group but I believe that Brazil will put them out in the first knockout round.

England are quite simply just lacking in all round quality. They don't have one position in which you could say the player is amongst the best in the tournament(maybe Fraser Forster ). I suspect the usual defensive football against the better sides. I seriously doubt England will make it out of their group as they are against an Italian side who can hold their own against anybody in this tournament and a Uraguay side who have both the advantage of being in South America and being able to play one of the deadliest strikers around.

Uraguay are not expected to win but I do suspect that they will do very well. They have got some good experienced defenders at the back and an inform Saurez up front. I do believe that they could top their group nevermind finishing second. They will definitely get past the first knockout round. After this point we never really know with Uraguay. In 2010 they got to the semi final and you can't help but get the feeling that it can be done again.

Belgium are of course the dark horses. They have a very talented starting 11 but injuries and suspension could really cripple them. I think the key thing for Belgium is that they have the current best goalkeeper in world football. I reckon that they will top their group. It is simply too hard to see how they will perform after the groups. I think that they could at least get to the quarter finals. If Belgium are to go further then we will need to see some more of Courtois' top form.

France are doing no damage to anybody this year. They have some talented players but you never really feel like they are much of a team. They were on thin ice during the playoff and I don't expect any improvements. I would say that they will get out of their group but they have been dreadful at times. I really don't see them moving anywhere beyond the last 16.

Italy will be overlooked by a lot of people. They won't be seen as true challengers. The thing is that they had a good Euros and have a decent squad. You can't write the Italians off against anyone in this tournament. I definitely can see them in the quarter final. At that point you can honestly say that the Italians will fancy their chances against anybody.

I don't see the USA imposing any mark on this World Cup. For starts they are in a group in which features 2 much stronger teams and 1 team who have shown that they can hold their own in the World Cup. They won't get out of their group. I can't even guarantee them a point from the group.

Nigeria may be able to turn some heads if they get a bit of luck and form. They are the kings of Africa coming into this tournament and clearly have some form of quality. People never know how the African teams will fair in the World Cup but I think that they could make the knockouts.

Switzerland are a side that you wouldn't even acknowledged on paper, gained automatic qualification for the World Cup. They clearly have something about them which can cause damage. No stars but a team who I think could have a fine tournament. I could see them in the knockouts.

Russia are, as always, going into a World Cup with nobody you have heard of yet they still seem to be a threat. The problem is that they are in no way invincible and, as seen in the Euros, are capable of a slip up. Russia need a good start in order to get the blood pumping and then need to use that to push them through. I suspect that they will get out of the group but will make it no further than the last 16.

Portugal are a team with some good talent. Though I'm going to say what we all think. Portugal is a group of decent players relying on the goalscoring ability Ronaldo. They will make the first round of knockouts and possibly the quarter final but that is as far as they will get.

Croatia are interesting. You look at them and see Modric, Mandzukic and Rakitic. So the top quality is there and we can see where the goals can come from. Now being from Scotland I can tell you that Croatia seem to be a side who can be stopped and can be hurt. Defensively they are not the best and quality crosses pose a threat. I think that they will just manage to get out of the group and no further but don't be surprised if you see Croatia sitting third after 3 games.

Most people don't favour Spain as they used to, they only lack in attack but now that have Diego Costa, arguably the best striker in the BBVA

Ah but you forget about Spains preferred system. Spain like the system involving 6 midfield players instead of having the striker. It is very likely that Spain will adopt this system again as it heavily suits the possession game. I don't think Costa will get too much game time to be honest.
