would you prefer a desktop or laptop?

First off you're going with a desktop. Unless, you're willing to drop over 1200 on a decent laptop.

I suggest you build it.
Whatever you buy for 600, you could build for 400.
600 on a pre-built pc isn't much. Most of the decent ones will cost around 800.

If you insist on buying a pre-built machine go to the Pc building section and tell them your conditions. They will find the best deal possible. Of course they will say the same as I have about building tho.

I suppose by DayZ you mean the mod from Arma 2. You most likely will be able to play Arma with low to normal settings, and still manage a decent frame rate.
If you mean the Standalone you most likely will have a more laggy experience. However, the game isn't optimized yet so performance will improve over time.

Well my mate bought a gaming PC , It's got :

R9 270x
FX 6300
GA 78mlt-USB3
8GB 1666MHz Ram

All together it was around 550 with an OS no monitor

Also of you could recommend some parts to get if I do build one and what they all cost together? Must be 600 or lower. (I have a uncle who is good with building computers and things like that, but not good at recommending things to get)

No both of those computers are garbage your gonna be better of building.
