A North Carolina school has ordered a 9-year old boy to stop wearing his My Little Pony bag, as it makes him a target for bullies.

According to ABC News, Grayson Bruce was told by Candler Elementary School that his lunch bag, which features the character Rainbow Dash from the TV show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, is a trigger for bullying, and that he should stop bringing it in.

The 9-year-old said of the bullying: They were taking it a little too far with, you know, punching me, pushing me down, calling me horrible names. Stuff that really shouldnt happen.

His mother, Nicola Bruce, thinks the school should try to punish the actual bullies, instead of focussing on her son.

She said: Saying a lunchbox is a trigger for bullying, is like saying a short skirt is a trigger for rape. Its flawed logic, it doesnt make any sense.

Buncombe County Schools stood by its decision to stop him from bringing the bag in, and said: An initial step was taken to immediately address a situation that had created a disruption in the classroom. Buncombe County Schools takes bullying very seriously, and we will continue to take steps to resolve this issue.

Despite being perceived as girly, the TV show has built up a large following of male fans, old and young.
Last month 11-year-old My Little Pony fan Michael Morones was left comatose after attempting suicide over anti-gay bullying.
According to his familys Twitter feed, Morones has since woken up and is progressing well in his treatment, but is likely to have suffered permanent damage

weather he likes it or if he is gay, he should still be allowed to take it to school. the school must be stupid for now punishing the bullies instead of making the boy change his lunchbox, its against his rights.

Ridiculous, the school should be punishing the bullies, not trying to deter them.
This is equal to telling a gay student to just 'stop being gay' to deter the bullies from harassing him/her.
Schools need to be much tougher on bullies, teachers need to stop being scared of being seen as that horrible teacher that no one likes.
If that's what it takes to stop someone being bullied, then so be it.

I kinda agree with the schools decision, No bullying shouldn't be happening, but why would you get bullied over a bag?; Change the bag, Stop the bully's?

Dealing with the specific set of bully's wont change much, just encourage more to join in.

If you had bright pink hair, you got bullied because of this, would you rather dye your hair or attempt to end your life over something that could be easily resolved.

I know there is going to be people saying he should be allowed to do what he likes, but that's life and this is our generation, what do you expect.

I agree with what the mother said. Why the hell would they focus on him and not the bullies?

This school just made a big mistake.
They should have the bullies suspended just like the mother said.
If he brings a girly bookbag, let him be.
Focus on stopping the bullies and teach the kids what is right from wrong.

It doesn't matter what the student could do to stop being bullied, they shouldn't have to change.
When the school has been involved, it shouldn't stop punishing until the bullying stops, if that means expelling people, if that means detentions, if that means making them sit in a room alone doing their work all day, that is what should be done.

There should be no remorse or sympathy shown to bullies, and nobody should have to change to fit the standards set by bullies.

why should the boy stop doing or wearing what he likes because he gets bullied, its not his fault that the bullies cant deal with gay people. i mean he might not even be gay, he might just be a bit on the girly side

This is such a dilemma.
Everyone here knows, that in today's society, that kid is a prime target to be bullied.
I think the School is helping the child out more than people think.
I'm sure that the child will be grateful for the Schools decision when he is older and realizes what he had done.
