I hardly ever use handheld gaming devices but I think in the future sometime they may become more popular than they already are.

My sister currently has the 3DS and she uses it all the time and always says to me how good it is. Handheld gaming is just something that I dont take much interest on.

I Still Own A PSP But it is never used. I Think they could grow in popularity in the future but with consoles out right now I don't think they have a chance at this moment in time

Handhelds aren't as dead as you would be led to believe.

Casual gaming is left to the console gamers, while PC gamers actually go hand in hand with handheld gaming to an extent. However, western video games have lost their place in the market. People pick up a Vita for JRPGs and in Japan for visual novels and eroge. The Nintendo DS is, as well, used for the same purpose; also sporting Monster Hunter as a seemingly exclusive, and Pokemon as an indefinite exclusive.

The reason I say PC gamers go hand in hand with these handhelds, is because PC gamers are the types who cling to the Japanese video game and visual novel market, and as well are the types more likely to play Pokemon.

In conclusion, they may become a dying breed in the western market, but the far eastern market is more than keeping them alive.

I think this is kind of a a waste of a sticky...

But smartphones will replace handheld gaming indefinitely imo.

The general example for why handheld sales is decreasing is smartphones, well what happens in 5-10 years when smartphones become extinct.
Between google glass, and smart watches, will smart phones still have a place?
I think not, this is where we will see handhelds begin to sell well again.

It's hard to say where the future will go though. The original Gameboy wasn't far removed from iOS games, to me. Outside of a handful of select titles it was mostly a gimmicky platform that you played specifically because you could do it anywhere and not necessarily because the games were amazing. Perhaps iOS games will eventually evolve into something more fully featured that could rival more traditional video games, or perhaps handheld consoles will flesh out the non-gaming elements of their platforms enough to rival iOS platforms. Who knows. As of right now they seem like distinctly separate entities though and I don't see any reason to believe Nintendo or Sony will make a complete 180 and start trying to make bite-sized iOS-like games over console games on the go.
