Can you turn off notifications when watching movies on xbox one?

Yes, say "xbox go to settings" and you can disable notifications in there.

Go to Settings, select Preferences and then select the notifications that you want to turn off. You can turn off individual notifications for Skype, messages or party. Or, you can turn off all notifications.

To to settings click preferences so and select the notifications u want to turn of
