i7 does not improve gaming at all, and actually in some cases there are certain i5's that do better in gaming. so yeah, definitely drop the i7 for an i5

also, you can get a nice dvd drive for $20. A $77 drive is overkill

Fine, spend the extra $100 on the i7 and watch as your gaming performance/internet browsing/whatever else increases. Oh wait, they won't. For what you'll be doing, you won't need an i7 or come close to fully utilizing it (no, using your CPU @100% doesn't justify full utilization). An i5 will be more than enough, don't be so quick to leap towards the big numbers and toss aside the more reasonable options.

I have an i7 because I know I need it. Almost daily I do work involving video editing/rendering and 3D animation/general work. I am no professional but I do require plenty of processing power to keep everything moving quickly so I can get work done. Because the i7 has hyperthreading I have that much more in terms of resources to multitask and do the work that I do.

The i7 is definitely a niche CPU, not for everyone simply because 95% of people don't need it.
