I know there is are not really any technology interference when using a cell phone on a plane but it is interesting that they might life the ban! I personally never turn off my phone and still can text most of the time, but if everyone was allowed to do it i see why it would become an issue. I would have no problem if everyone would text but it would be that one person who is screaming and being loud that would annoy the poop out of me!

You're in a rolled up piece of metal being thrown over an ocean and you have a 9 year old child behind you kicking your seat and screaming that he's bored.
If that doesn't make you uneasy enough, the person next to you is going to be making business calls for the next 6 hours.
If this isn't encouraging someone to have a nervous breakdown mid-flight, I don't know what is.

Keep them banned, or make it against the rules to make phone calls.

the reason for being banned is not that but because when you are in the air your phone will pick up signals from different towers and it might interfere with the airplanes tower.

Let me explain something to you.

TTGZOMBIFIED is on the right track, but not quite correct.

In the United States, the use of personal electronic devices (PEDs) has recently been legalized during IFR flights by the FAA. Fun fact: it was never illegal to use a PED on a VFR flight, and I normally do use PEDs when I fly VFR. The idea behind PED use was that it would interfere with certain systems, like ILS. Actually, when aircraft are directed to hold short for a landing aircraft on ILS runways, they are expected to hold short farther than normal (behind the ILS beacon), so as to not interfere with ILS connections on the landing aircraft. During an IFR flight, an unaltered connection is absolutely necessary because you might not be able to see but 10 feet outside of that cockpit window. The FAA wanted to take no chances, but have recently decided to put it to the test and has put it up to the airline as to whether or not allow PEDs.

As for phone calls; the FCC is the reason that is illegal. I don't believe that will change. Cell phones use line-of-sight cell towers for their connection, and they might have line-of-sight on one or two towers at a time. When at 5,000AGL, they might have line-of-sight on 100 towers at once. With 150-400 people on the aircraft, that puts an unbelievable amount of stress on the tower and clogs up the tower, for lack of a better term.

I'll admit that I don't turn off my phone during IFR flights, but I ask that you at least don't use it unless you're on airplane mode.

They say only turn it off during takeoff or landing. I don't know the exact reason why. They say it can cause electrical problems ETC. When i'm in an aluminum tube 40,000 feet in the air. I'll turn my phone off for the first 10 minutes, no big deal.

I am guessing many of y'all haven't been on many airplanes. As phones are not banned. That is totally not the correct word to be used in this situation. And honestly the thing that pisses me off about people is that you only have to go without using your electronic device for 10 minutes at the most. And now getting on topic as a person that makes countless plane trips, this pisses me off, now I have to listen to the person with an obnoxious voice on the phone for hours.I have always loved my plane rides as I have about 125 hours flight time totaled. But now. Kill me now.

I have to agree with you. I have around 98 hours flight time, and when I am flying, I really don't want to have to listen to someone on the phone during that time.

I would prefer not to listen to 10 peoples phone calls while sitting on the plane for hours on end. Thats just me though.
