The best editing software, in my opinion, is After Effects (From CS4+). I would recommend getting the newer ones but if you're computer can't handle it, get CS4.

The only downside is that you will need a lot of patience when using it because for beginners, it can be very frustrating. If you're looking purely to learn and then move onto more advanced things, start with Sony Vegas Pro. Otherwise go with After Effects!

These are all bad answers no offense.
Depending on your skillset / what you want to do:
After Effects: Motion graphics and compositing
Adobe Premiere Pro: Cutting
Final Cut: Don't bother with FXP:X
Vegas: For noob cutting.

You can't really cut with after effects or at least not nearly as well as you can with premiere.
