hi, i have had this problem for awhile and i don't know whats causing it, i have an amd board with the amd processor cooler properly installed, i have it plugged in the cpu_fan and i still get the cpu fan error.

It doesn't bother me as i disabled the fan speed control in the bios, but my computer is kinda loud with the stock heat sink in it. if nobody has a solution ill just go buy the hyper 212 evo.

is it possible that my motherboard bios is not up to date or is something else causing it?

thanks,

this is the motherboard i have
asus m5a97 r2.0

So I'm assuming you're using the stock AMD cooler? Look inside the case while the machine is on to see if the fan is spinning, could be a bad bearing or the fan is outright broken. If it's spinning normally, google the error and see what results you find.

it might be defective motherboard/bad cpu thread or it might be a lower/higher fan setting then the motherboard would like it to run at. Have you changed the fan speed at any time? You should be able to lower/higher the speed on a asus board in bios.

If you are sure the fan is spinning, then there is nothing stopping you plugging in a case fan into the CPU_FAN header to see if the CPU cooler is reporting the fan speed incorrectly or not there at all.
