I thought my character got deleted because I went to go online and he wasn't there but so instead of making a new character at the #1 spot I dashboarded and went back on gta online but instead of going straight online I went to choose character and he was there and now im playing online with him again try your luck guys it might work for you hope this helps.

Happened to me all night and all last night, They keep re-appearing but the server's really struggling currently and it's not come back up, I sure do hope I get my char back.

i thought mine was deleted because on my character wheel switching thing he wasn't showing up but i just switched the bottom one and it asked me if i wanted to go to GTA Online and i clicked yes and it took me to my character and i could play my car and everything was there.
