That's down to personal opinion. My mate came over one day and said how did you get Win 7 to run so fast on a mechanical hard drive. I then told him it was Win 8. I've got it looking and running the same as Windows 7 - and it absolutely flies. Amazing, a top notch operating system.
Boots up in ~20 seconds rather than 1:57 (Windows 7).

I use a SSD for my boot up so there is no difference for me.

My point being I don't need to spend 70 quid on an SSD - I get quick enough speeds with a mechanical drive plus extra storage.
I have also seen a large improvement with CPU and HDD usage time, as well as gaming performance increases.

Windows 8 has seen various improvements over 7. With enough tweaking, you can get the feel of 7 back without having to sacrifice performance. Windows 8 is quicker, snappier, and feels a lot more clean than 7.
