There's a 97 pound skateboard. You don't have any cash so you borrow 50 pounds from your Mum and 50 pounds from your Dad which totals 100 pounds. You buy the skateboard and you get 3 pounds change. You give 1 pound back to your Mum, 1 pound back to your Dad and keep the other 1 pound for yourself. So now you owe your Mum 49 pounds and you owe your Dad 49 pounds which totals 98 pounds. 98 pounds plus the 1 pound you kept for yourself totals 99 pounds. Where did the other 1 pound go?

EDIT: You don't owe BOTH parents $49. You owe ONE OF THEM $49, whilst the other only has $48, COZ YOU TOOK THE REMAINING $1.
Initially, ONE PARENT owes you $49, and the other owes your $48 ($1 to one parent, $2 to the other OR $1.5 to both but this is more complicated lol). But since YOU TOOK the remaining $1... well? Can you see it now???? Because it is an ODD number, you get an ODD number for a change. HENCE. ONE parent gets MORE than the other in return, but since you TOOK the dollar, the rule still applies. You are still missing 1 dollar.
$49 + $48 = $97 ($1 given to mum, dad, and you took one)
IF you get back from yo parents the $1 you gave them:
(49+1) + (48+1) = $99
The remaining dollar is the one that you took!
If you DIDN'T take the dollar, you would have given BOTH parents $1.50 each (1.5x2 = $3)
It would still add up to $100.
