I'll be building my Gaming PC soon and was gonna order an Anti Static Wrist Strap so I don't damage any of the parts, but is the strap really necessary?

Yes. Although it is unlikely, it is possible that a static discharge could render a component completely dead. Better to spend a little bit than take the risk.

Rebuilt my PC several times over, never used any sort of static protection. I leave the AC power cable plugged into the PSU with the PSU switch OFF, as the earth on the cable will earth the whole case which i touch before and during working.

That's a pretty good idea... But I would still use a wristband. You can still get a shock or even worse, your motherboard/CPU could.

Agreed, for the cost of the wristband and the piece of mind it offers, it might be worth it. But me being all do know, think later with a electrical background i usually just go for it

Thank you guys for the feedback. I'll definitely be grabbing the Wrist strap.

As long as you're responsible then no harm should come to the components when you don't use one, if it's no hassle then there's no harm in using one just to be on the safe side, but it's definitely not necessary.

Hardly worth it. Never used one, never found the need. Though, placebo effects are probably what convince people to buy them. Before you handle sensitive components just be sure to ground yourself using the back section of your case.

But if you feel that a wristband would help, by all means purchase one.

I'd buy one if I lived in an area with low relative humidity and temperature. These factors promote static buildup along with carpet, shoe sole materials, socks, etc.
