has been created by showing all of the routes taken by air and sea, including more than 58,000 different flight paths.
The brightest areas - in North America, Europe and East Asia - indicate a large volume of short-haul flights in these areas.
The image was created by Michael Markieta, a Canadian transport planner who specialises in "mapping anthropogenic influence on the Earth's surface".
Writing on his blog, he writes: "Without a basemap of the continents, we can clearly make out the shape of many major regions of the world."
