i3 3220 3.4 ghz
8gb's of ram

i3 3220 is not even close to being terrible, I own one and can play battlefield 3 on ultra with 35-45fps(it's not all about the processor). To op for 1000 you can do a lot better than that, get something with at least an i5 for future proofing.

Changing to an i5 will do NOTHING. It's the graphics card that determines how well the game will look and how well it will run.

You'd see more performance increase going from a 650 to a 660 than you would going from an i3 to a Xeon.

Graphics card for how well it looks....yes, but for performance the processor has a bit too do with it, with games utilising more than two cores for gaming you will notice the difference(especially with mmo's) some games are more CPU than GPU.And if that was the case as you say they would not put recommended processor on the boxes.

2 cores is sufficient in any game.

As he stated in the video with battlefield 3(which the op would be wanting to play) 2 cores would be sufficient(maybe missing a few npc's) but as I said in earlier post getting an i5 at least would be for future proofing as more games are starting use use more cores. And you would notice a difference between an i3 and i5.
