people can be seen as attention seekers if they think people are going to fall for it. There is a way to tell though, if their vocabulary is good then by chance they are, but they should be able to prove that they are

It is a shame that people would pretend that they are in the military.

People had died to protect our country and their loved ones and having someone pretending they're in the military is just sad.

Pretending to be in the military is not something that should be taken as a "joke" at all.

You earn no respect in my books pretending to be in the military.

Good rant, not pointless at all.
