i have just been looking at a case and 3 of the fans use molex plugs. do they connect onto the motherboard or do they need an adapter??

They connect directly to the power supply, but you can use adapters to connect them to the 3/4-pin headers on the motherboard.

Since fan controllers typically use 3 or 4-pin connectors, you'd need either different fans or adapters. If you connect the fans to the power supply with molex, you cannot control them, but if you use an adapter and connect them to the motherboard, you should be able to control them to some extent via the BIOS.

Yes, everything is compatible and I wouldn't suggest any changes. You do need a hard drive, though.
