I want to know why Americans call what us British call Football, Soccer? I know that you guys call American Football, Football but I don't understand why considering the rest of the world call Football, Football. Also, was Football initially called Futbol or is that just a European (possibly Spanish) spelling of Football.

Wow, that was difficult to word.

why would it be stupid to call it soccer? I see no problem calling "futbol" soccer. There would be no confusion over the sports in America.

When it was first played here, it was called Association Football. After some time, they shortened down to just Soccer. This is what I was tolled but I don't know how much of it is true.

It was actually the British that called it "soccer" in the late 1800's, just like they used to call rugby "rugger".They later permanently named it "football" but the US already had "American Football" so they kept the name as "soccer". I hate when everyone gets on Americans for calling it soccer when that was one of the original names given by the British.
