UPDATES!!!!
Updated as of 3/14/13:
+Added more to "Repeaters" section
+Added "What To Expect Next" section
+Added a "Some More Information" section.
+Added "What's the best to use a button, lever or pressure plate for my creation".

Okay before i start, the reason why this topic is in the Xbox section rather than the pc is because i can explain redstone with the xbox version better than the PC because i don't have a great computer so i can't really play PC minecraft that much, so i'm limited to the Xbox for now. Anyways let's get started.

This is a guide for new minecrafters (or not so new minecrafters) that want to know how to use the wonders of redstone in their world. This guide will contain the following: (More will be added as I get more questions from people)

Beginners Section:
- What is Redstone?
- How can it benefit me?
- What's the big deal if it's not covered?
- Can you provide some world saves to help me understand this further?
- How can i tell if it's best to use a buton, lever, or pressure plate?

Advanced Section
- How can Repeaters make a difference in my creation?
- What's an Inverter?
- What can i make with pistons?
- Why should i care if it's not compact?
- Some more tips to make your creation 20% cooler.

BASIC REDSTONERS

What is redstone?
Redstone is an ore that looks like a red teardrop (in my opinion) that sends an "electric" charge which is powered by either a redstone torch, lever, button, or a pressure plate. It usually comes in a group of about 3-5 depending on the area. When mined you usually will receive anywhere from 3-5 redstone dusts. This is what the ore looks like so you will recognize it when you see it.

How can it benefit me?
I'm glad i asked that for you because that is a very good question. How can it benefit you? Well for one it makes farming a LOT easier. If you take a regular wheat farm and add a system that gathers and collects the wheat into a designated spot just by pulling or pressing a button it makes the job SO MUCH EASIER. You can also make cool sliding doors that can be really complex requiring a lock code to open, or just a simple 2x2 door with a lever to open. You can make a mob spawner so that the mobs will die, but you get to retrieve their "droppings" by using the same system as the wheat farm. Then there's creations to kill people (or mobs) like an arrow dispenser sentry, TNT cannons, trap doors, etc. The benefits are endless, but I'm just going to stick with those for now. Like i said this will be more detailed later, this is just a first "draft".

Whats the big deal if the redstones not covered?
Well if you're on peaceful then it doesn't matter if it's covered. However it does matter if you're on any other difficulty because there's these mobs that like to ruin your fun. Creepers like to blow up your redstone contraptions, which is a pain to reconnect the redstone if it's really complex. Enderman like to pick up blocks which could also ruin the redstone creation. Then you have griefers and people that like to ruin your fun by destroying ONE piece of redstone dust and then you have to search for hours to find it and fix it. It also looks better when covered, so all in all it's better to cover it if you can.

Can you provide me with some worldsaves so i can further understand this insanity?
Yes of course! Just not at the moment I'm sorry I would LOVE to give you a few gamesaves, but i don't have any at the moment but i can certainly work on that if you all would like that! I do however have the TTG Share your creations link for you! Forums/t=4095903/your-minecraft-c...loads.html

How can i tell whether to use a button, lever, or pressure plate for my creation?

That's a great question i asked for you guys! I think it's best if i break the 3 down into descriptions stating the pro's and con's of each one.

Levers:
Levers are used to either have a redstone charge STAY open or NOT stay open. It's always going to be one or the other AT ALL TIMES! Some people like to use levers for doors, but the only problem with that is that you'll have to close it again which takes the point away when you think about it if it's a door. Levers are ideally the best choice hwen you need something to stay on or off.

Pressure Plates:
Pressure plates are very tricky. SOMETHING has to be on it for it to activated and the redstone will stay activated until that object on the plate gets OFF the plate. I like to use plates if i want to make a trap. Pressure plates can be hidden well which are excellent for traps. If you take a wooden plate you can drop an item on there and it will be activated, but this does not work for Stone plates.

Buttons:
Buttons send a redstone charge for about 2-3 seconds. These are best used when you need something to quickly power on and then right off. I use buttons for elevators because you will only need to use that button when going either up or down.

ADVANCED REDSTONERS

Okay so you've move on to the next level of redstone awesomeness, HURRAY . Now this is where it gets interesting.

How can Repeaters make a difference in my creation?
Redstone Repeaters MAKE A HUGE IMPACT! Repeaters can delay the redstone charge allowing a desired delay for the charge to power through the repeater. Say you wanted to make a retractable stair case, well it's alright if they all come out at the same time, but you wanna know whats cooler? If they all came one after another, not all at once! Delaying is an important part because it allows for that extra seconds which can make or break your creation. With repeaters you can also make a constant recdstone charge! This can be used for mini-games like Wipeout. It can be used for other things too, like making a disco dance party floor (in the computer because there's redstone lamps). They also extend the redstone charge another 15 blocks so that's always good!

What's an Inverter?
An Inverter is when you take a redstone torch that's on a block (that can have a redstone charge going through it like wool for example) and have an active redstone going INTO that block. When the redstone dust is powered on, the torch will be turned off. When the dust is off, the torch will be lit. It's useful for many things like for instance i had to use inverters for my Tic Tac Toe creation which i will post later on. I can't really type as good as i can show you guys how inverters work, so i'll make a gamesave just for inverters. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

What can i make with pistons?
There's TONS of things you can do with pistons! You can make sliding doors, digital clocks, mini games like Tic Tac Toe, Retractable stairs, wheat farms, and those are just a few possibilities! Now i should explain the difference between a Sticky Piston and a regular Piston. A sticky piston will push the block that's attached to it out AND retract it back. Kinda like a pulling and pushing motion. The regular piston ONLY pushes the block. It DOES NOT pull it back like the sticky piston!

Why should i care if it's not compact?
it really doesn't matter, but you want to show off your skills right? Well smaller is better in the redstone game. The less space consuming it is the more people will like it. My guess for this is because people don't want to spends hours doing something that could take 10 minutes because it's smaller.

Some more tips to make your creation 20% cooler
I'm sorry to inform you that this part has not been filled yet. I'll make sure to fill it, but right now i'm waiting for people to ask for any additional things to be added, so this will be filled in later i promise!

EXPERT REDSTONERS

So this is just to establish a Beginner-Advanced-Expert section, I have yet to fill this out (as you can see) but for now, here's a cookie

SOME MORE INFORMATION

Basic Redstoners:

T FLIP-FLOP
You might be asking "what the heck is a T FLIP-FLOP?" Well the answer is it's just a fancy way of saying "How to make a button act like a lever" I will be providing a tutorial for this as it will be included in "Applejack-'s Redstone School" but for now the best i can do it provide you with a video

How to make a basic mob spawner
Same thing as the T Flip Flop, will be in my redstone school, but i can provide you with a video for the time being

WHAT CAN I EXPECT NEXT FROM THIS TOPIC?

I want people to know what to expect (with some exceptions for suprises ;) ), So this is a list of all things you can expect in the next "update" of this topic.

- Some gamesaves (won't say which ones)
- A more in depth video discussing Inverters and how they can make your creation Awesome or Not so awesome.

Well that's it for now! If you would like to see anything else added or have any questions, Don't hesitate to PM me! I always read them

Also.. I am thinking about making a redstone school map that will teach you the basics of redstone.

I will upload it and let you put it on this topic if I ever come around to finishing it.
