I just built my computer with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE, but my friend is build his computer with the same processor in 2 months. He is on a really tight budget so I thought I could sell him my processor for less than retail and upgrade to a AMD FX-8150. I believe my motherboard is compatible and I feel like the processor I have now is bottle necking my 7850 overclocked.

I would sell the processor for 70$ and I can get a AMD FX-8150 with a water cooler for $180 on new egg.

I also feel that if I don't upgrade, it wont be worth it to upgrade my riog later on because it is a budget build with not a very good upgrade track so I think this switch might prolong it's life?

I could really use suggestions and any input would be very helpful. Thanks!

You mean downgrade? The 8150 is a awful processor for gaming

So you are saying that my processor now is better than an 8 core? I highly doubt it and I don't want any intel fanboys responding please

The 965 is STILL a great CPU and it shouldn't hold back your hardware. If you're going to upgrade, the FX 6300, 8320, and 8350 should be on your radar, not Bulldozer.

What motherboard and cooler do you have? If you want more performance, teh Phenom IIs are great overclockers and the same goes for the 7850.

On games like Crysis 3 when it is loading NRA's, it drops in fps dramatically and I am pretty sure it is a cpu issue. I have a 1100/1350 clock on my 7850 so I thought it must be the CPU. Would it be worth the upgrade to a FX 6300? I also need: another HDD, Gaming mouse, more case fans, fan controller, and a new heat sink because AMD makes terrible heat sinks.

Thanks for helping!

Crysis 3 is dependant on both CPU and graphics performance, so it's plausible that the CPU could hold you back, especially with an aggressive overclock on your card. But the 965 still performs very, very well and it's difficult to justify a CPU upgrade for you.

Crysis 3 does love cores, but the 965 holds its own. What motherboard do you have? Overclocking is going to be the most worthwhile CPU upgrade.

MSI 970A-G46 is my motherboard. I also only have 4gb of ram at 1333 so I am upgrading that to 8gb of 1866

You might experience some throttling when overclocking with that board because the new 8-cores have, but you should be fine. You have an aftermarket CPU cooler, right?

Sadly no, but I am buying a cooler master 212 plus

I would upgrade to a FX-6300 and sell my 965 BE for $80 or $90

I just spent a boat load on a nice keyboard and mouse pad so I only have $30

I just want to get the full performance I can for cheap. Would it throttle the six core? It is a good motherboard and my airflow is outstanding and I am adding 3 more case fans for a total of 6 and a new aftermarket cooler more ram another Hard Drive and a new mouse.

I don't want all that to be held back by a CPU
