If you want to progress in Ultimate Teams seasons mode, chances are youre going to have to work out how to get past David Luiz. The 25-year-old defender was immensely popular in Fifa 12 thanks to his added speed, while his strength, height and aggression make him a really good all round Fifa centre half which is no surprise seeing as Gary Neville labelled him a Playstation defender!

With Premier League teams still the most popular in FUT13, my tip is to look at strikers who test David Luiz in two main areas. One is aerially (strength, jumping, height and heading acc) and the other is speed wise. If you play the archetypal little and large combo in this respect you can get the better of Luiz as well as playing a neat, varied game which is effective on the counter and can also work the ball wide and look for a target man.

The first thing is of course to know your enemy, and as such Luizs key stats are as follows: Acceleration 78, Sprint Speed 78, Agression 84, Heading 82, Standing Tackle 82. Hes weaker in marking (77) and jumping (71), meaning a proper target man can have a field day!

For the rich amongst us, the perfect combination to exploit those later stats would be something like Mario Gomez and Marco Reus who are both slightly cheaper as Bundesliga players, but offer Luiz-beating quality in abundance. Gomez is a brute (strength 88, heading acc 86, attack positioning 91) while Reus is uncatchable once past the last defender (sprint speed 92, acceleration 88, dribbling 86). For the less well off, a combo of Klose (jumping 94, heading acc 91) and Esswein (acceleration 91) or players like Aduriz, Aubameyang and Salpingidis are effective but dont break the bank.

When youre playing against an infuriatingly solid back five, youre going to need players who can come off with a pot shot even when you havent quite got them into the best position. You might be monopolising the possession, but that killer ball is slightly difficult to find and as such youre fizzing it into feet only to see the ball hoofed clear. Nightmare.

The way to combat this is to go for quality off both sides. When you feed the ball in, youre not always going to be able to get it on your favourite stars better foot, and as such you might end up with feeble efforts on goal and your player ending up on his backside. To combat this, go for weaker foot ability as much as youd go for finishing with chemistry and morale negating any problems in the latter area.

A surprisingly effective option here is Obafemi Martins, who obviously has the pace but can also fire off either side with 5 star weaker foot. Diego Forlan is good here too, but if youve really got the cash then Falcao is king. Many decent strikers have 4* and are financially viable, so Id definitely advise you to have a couple players who offer that right/left combo.

This is really for Fifa 13 across the board, but the old 25 yard curler is far less effective this time around. If youre approaching the keeper from and inside left or right position you want to be going for power, unless youre ten to twelve yards out and the added curve is the only way youll get it round the keeper.

Thus shot power is a ludicrously important asset to have in your forward line, as well as across your midfield. You always want the driven free kick to be an option in play, too. Alberto Costa is therefore one of my tips here, as he is really cheap (1k-2k max) but has 91 shot power and 89 long shots. People dont really know about him either, so might get a bit of a shock especially if you throw in his 87 free kicks! In terms of strikers, Emenike has the power to go with his incredible speed while the likes of Defoe, Dzeko, Cardozo and Negredo are all effective from in and around the box.

Go for the Ridiculously Cheap but Unpopular Players

Goes without saying, but picking up bargains can really be the difference between an average team and the ultimate team. If youre still building your side, players like Marko Arnautovic (all round speed, height power), Adrian (control and pace) or the indomitable Alessandro Matri are all available for less than 1k, while defenders like Mamadou Sakho, Yanga-MBiwa and Sokratis have the all important power and pace at a super cheap price!

Here are a list of 11 decent players for cheap prices, obviously there is no chemistry but pick and chose who you want to put in your team.

From just inside the area most goalkeepers are powerless to stop a driven effort, but certain keepers seem to pull off completely ludicrous stops from point blank range. One of those is Diego Alves, who seems to be able to stop literally anything from around the edge of the 18 yard box a rather infuriating trait to play against!

Of course the likes of Alves have their little foibles when you whip crosses in or hit shots at their body which they parry rather than catch, but they remain the most effective at keeping the ball out of your net. The stats to look for on cards are reflexes and diving with Alves being 90 and 91 respectively. Tim Wiese, Igor Akinfeev, Steve Mandanda and Federico Marchetti are your other go-to guys, unless you can shell out on a Neuer or Casillas. Shay Given has 85 diving and 86 reflexes too if youre struggling to afford Joe Hart!
