Lately I've seen a lot of people hating on artists or even certain songs because they have achieved mainstream success. This really annoys me because I really don't see anything wrong with listening to more popular music. I like Cam Meekins and I also like Mac Miller. Problem?
When I think of mainstream music I think of the sound not how popular it is. I consider The Spotlight by Logic mainstream because of the way it sounds.
For example Macklemore released his first album this year and it had huge commercial success. This made him gain many fans. He also lost many because of the people who decide that once an artist becomes popular or "mainstream" that they are garbage. I've been listening to Macklemore for nearly 2 years and I still do listen to him. I'm happy for the guy.
I just don't see the problem with an artist being popular. I'm a fan of more underground artists than I am popular artists because underground music is usually better. For the most part popular music isn't that good and that's why I think most people hate popular music so much. 2 Chainz is awful but that doesn't make Wiz Khalifa awful.
Listen to what you like, not just what isn't popular.

I dont think people hate on the mainstream because its big. I think a lot of people hate on mainstream because of what the songs talk about. Go turn on your radio and listen for about half an hour. What did you hear? Most likely songs about break ups and sex. And there might be one or two songs that weren't about those 2 things. But for the most part all "mainstream" songs are about those two things. And as for when people stop liking artists after they become big, I think that's because they think that the artist is going to turn and start making songs about money, girls and weed. And I dont think people like when their favorite artist changes even a little bit. I'm a huge Mac Miller fan (obviously) and even though in a lot of his songs from "The High Life" and "Kids" he said he was never going to change, I'm happy that he did change. His new songs are amazing. He is becoming a great lyricist and his songs have a lot more meaning than his older songs. But yet I still see people saying they want the "Old Mac" back. So I think its the aspect of the artist growing and becoming more popular that people dont like.

I don't like it because most of it is just about drugs, sex, and violence, and also most of the songs just repeat itself 100 times, also they ARTISTS don't make their own music and they are super auto tuned. I miss the good old music where they actually took pride in their songs.

The problem i have with the radio is they promote very devilish stuff. Hip hop we're a very influential culture the second most influential thing behind religion. All the radio mostly talks abou is sex drugs money etc i'm not saying they should make music saying "Let's be friends " but sexy money drugs can't be all you represent. Rick Ross was a CO how is he living what he's talking about? The radio brainwashes kids to think that's all life is about. The devil runs the music industry (I'm NOT taking about illuminati) people talk about evil stuff.

Also forgot to give my 2 cents with the second part. I hate music hipster who say " That person sold out". People sound stupid when they brag about they been listening to a artist longer than you have (not talking bout you).

I agree completely. It seems that people think music gets worse as its gets more popular, when in reality, that means it is getting better. If a song wasn't appealing, then people wouldn't listen to it, and it wouldn't become popular.

It's really a chicken v. egg thing though. Is it the music industry that willingly promotes things like sex, drugs, and money, or is it the people that want to hear about sex, drugs, and money to be able to justify indulging in such things? The music industry is a business; it has no feeling, no intentions other than making money. People buy music that allows them to justify their actions, because, "Well I heard it on the radio, which is publicly broadcasted, so it must be okay!" The radio is merely a channel to convey the public opinion, as it always has been. It's not like music became scummy before we the people became scummy.

The first part i can reply to idk what you mean in the second part. Normal people are forced to listen to the radio unlike me and you. Kids look up to Nicki Minaj 2 chainz Lil Wayne Rick Ross Wiz K they see what they're doing and think well i'm gonna do that too. Social media has painted these pictures of these guys like they're in fact jesus himself ( not really saying "Jesus" but someone who's considered in hi power) the new rappers are cool but just because they're cool doesn't mean they make meaningful music.

I don't think we're disagreeing at all. But the social media is run by people--people who are in the business for profit. The stuff that makes profit is the stuff people want to hear, which is justification of doing whatever they want to do. Artists are looked up to because they're the fulfillment of what the general public wants, and the general public nowadays seems to be made up of myopic "children," who were never told what was wrong, which is the reason all of this works. It's a cycle created by the people, not the devil.
