I'd look towards the Turtle Beach X32 (They're like the cooler version of the X31, mostly same internals). Those are $99 from Gamestop, just bought a pair for my dad for Christmas yesterday.

I personally have the X31, which is the white, original version, and they're nothing but great. I'm not a HEAVY, HEAVY, gamer - but when I play, I like the quality of my experience to be better than playing through speakers from my flat screen TV.

The XP400's are pretty good, they have true surround sound, rather than simulating surround sound by sending the frequencies to your ears at different speeds for you to pick up on direction. They are $219.

You can also, if you can find the damn things, get X41/X42 (Same case with these ones, just different colors essentially)

The X42's, which can be found by searching google - just type in Turtle Beach X42, is the first one. They're 160. They're the more upgraded, advanced version of the 31/32. Much more stable, true surround sound. I'd personally go with these if you are trying to find a VERY NICE, stable headset with amazing sound and comfort. Otherwise, if you're just a general gamer - go with the X32. That's my personal experience.

Yeah dude, X32 and X42 have been their more...bought headset I guess you'd say, the more popular.

I suggest going to the X32, X42, and the XP400 videos tab which is next to the images tab on their website. Then you can visually see the differences, and see if it's worth your money or not.

yes 7-1 surround sound and yeah you can hear them without awareness you just have to mess around with the game sound options like turn game voice off stuff like that

Whoever said they had X12's, they're also pretty good - they're like the wired version of the X32's. That's about the only decent comparison I could give you. I'm sure that's not what you're looking for, though. :p
