They see the black hole as they pass by distant stars. The star lights it up just enough to see them.

Not too sound flaming or anything but that is not how black holes are detected, a black hole is detected by looking somewhere where there are stars, if there is a black hole nearby you will see basically a black cataclysm where the light can not get past hence the word "Black hole". For anyone one who doesn't know about black holes, they're basically huge objects that are in space and light can not get past it due to the intense gravity field, it is also believed to slow time down to where it is near complete stop. The black hole is formed from a dying star that has already gone "critical" and has released a Supernova, which then turns the star into the Black Hole.

That's exactly how they see it, by not seeing it. If that makes sense... Imagine a room full of white paint and bright lights were shining. A black spec would really stick out like a sore thumb - because it's not light. It's the same principle. I hope you understand what I am saying
the real way they see a black hole. a black hole is dead star that blew up refered as a supernova bigest exploision ever that created a black hole an invisible thing that sucks up everything in its path even light istself. a way to see a black hole is to look at a galaxy you will se an unusual spin in the galaxy or the galaxy is being spun by a black hole and if the black hole has no galaxy or planets being eatin by it you will see the black hole bending the light in a circle.

i hope i explained a little but im not ganna sit here for an hour typing on an xbox chatpad.
