This guide should cover almost everything beginner jailbreakers need to know

Q: What is jailbreaking
A: Jailbreaking is a form of a hardware or software exploit, to use a device to run unauthorized applications, or extensions. (In other words, doing things Apple didn't want to be done for whatever reasons)

Q: Is "Jailbreaking" Legal?
A: Yes, Jailbreaking iPhones & iPods are legal, its been rumors going around saying that performing such exploits on tablets, is illegal. But keep in mind, if you walk into Apple with a jailbroken device (theres no way to hide it except restoring to stock firmware) they can refuse to service your broken device. Same with Android phones.

Q: Why should I jailbreak ?
A: Well its all your decision, Some people do it just to access pirated apps (which is mainly why people want it stopped), others do it for cool features like changing the theme, the keyboard, carrier name, unlocking for other networks, and much more. Do your research, and if you see things you like, go for it.

Q: Can i make my own jailbreak tool, and figure out the exploits myself ?
A: I cant say yes or no, but it would take lost and lots of time, and not only that, you must know coding, and much more knowledge than you think.

Q: Where did jailbreaking come into hand?
A: In June of 2007

Q: Who invented "Jailbreaking" ?
A: George Francis Hotz Jr. Otherwise known as "GeoHot"

Q: How did he do this ?
A: In June, 2007, Hotz became the first person to jailbreak an iPhone.[5][6] According to Hotz's blog...
he traded his unlocked 8 GB iPhone to Terry Daidone, the founder of Certicell, for a Nissan 350Z and three 8 GB iPhones. Hotz said he wanted to give the iPhones to the other members of the team who created the hack with him. Hotz's hardware-based unlocking technique has largely been replaced by software unlocking that does not require dis-assembly of the iPhone.[7] On February 8, 2008, Hotz developed the software unlock for the iPhone's new bootloader version 4.6 that was previously only achievable with a "testpoint based hardware unlock". On July 3, 2009, Hotz announced purplera1n, the first public software exploit for jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS. Details were posted on his blog.
On October 13, 2009, at 3:20AM Hotz released blackra1n, a jailbreak for all iPhones and iPod Touches. The only caveat was that the iPod touch third generation would need a "tethered jailbreak" to work. On October 30, 2009, Hotz released Blackra1n RC2, an update to his previous blackra1n utility. This version allows MC Model iPod Touch 2G (8 GB iPod Touch, third generation) and new-bootrom iPhone 3GS users to jailbreak their iPod touches as well. (tethered jailbreak only) On October 31, 2009, Hotz announced the impending release of Blackra1n RC3, this version to include blacksn0w which would allow SIM unlock of all iPhones using Blacksn0w RC1. Blacksn0w released on November 3, 2009.
On March 27, 2010, Hotz established a website for his newest jailbreak software, limera1n. On June 24, 2010, Hotz wrote on Twitter that he had no plans to release a new jailbreak. He has told people looking for a jailbreak release to 'keep an eye on Spirit,[8] the currently used program for 3.1.x jailbreaking. On July 10, 2010, Hotz published that he had been able to jailbreak an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0. As evidence, he provided a picture of the device executing Cydia. On July 13, 2010, Hotz announced his retirement from jailbreaking, saying that it's not fun as it used to be, and people were taking too serious something he used to do just as a distraction.[9]
On October 8, 2010, Hotz confirmed he was releasing a Jailbreak on 10/11/10, one day after the release of Greenpois0n. He also posted a picture of limera1n running on an iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch fourth generation, iPhone 4 and on the iPad. On October 9, 2010, Hotz released limera1n Beta 1 without support for the 3GS (due to a problem with the bootrom). This suspended the release of the SHAtter exploit in the form of greenpois0n, due for release the next day. On the limera1n website, he claims this was to make the Chronic Dev team "do the right thing" presumably implying that they should save their jailbreak exploit for fifth generation devices. He later went on to release three more betas, containing support for iPhone 3GS models, along with various bug fixes and other stability enhancements. On October 11, 2010, Hotz released what appears to be the final version of his jailbreak (RC1b).[10] Hotz also put on his website that the Mac version of this jailbreak is "coming in 7 years", but was released about 2 weeks later. Q: Can i jailbreak other devices than my iPhone, iPod, or iPad ?
A: Yes, PS3, Android as well, which would be referred to as "Rooting", and can be a much more complicated process for some devices.

Q: Can i jailbreak my 5th Genration iPhone, iPad Mini, or 5th Gen iPod Touch ?
A: Yes you can, as long as you have iOS 6.0/1

Q: Websites have been claiming to have Jailbreaks and unlocks for the iPhone 5 and iOS6, is it real ?
A: No, it is not real at all, as these guys have already been exposed as scammers. Do not trust unknown sources or devs. Only trust the Evad3rs (Pod2g, Pimskeks, MuscleNerd Planetbeing)

Q: Who do i trust for legit info about Jailbreaking and Unlocking ?
A: Evad3rs, The Dev Team, GeoHot, Pod2g (Twitter- @Pod2g), Websites such as dailyifix and ifans and Evasi0n.com

Q: What devices can i jailbreak?
A: Thanks to the Evad3rs, we can jailbreak the iPhone 3gs, 4/4s. iTouch 4 and 5, iPad 2, 3 and mini, and Apple TV 2

Q: How do i jailbreak my device ?
A: Backup your device using iCloud or iTunes. Download the latest version of evasi0n from [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] (OS X, Windows, Linux) and, if necessary, unzip the tool. You may need to run Evasi0n in administrator mode on Windows.
Connect your device to the computer through the USB port, and launch the Evasi0n application.
With your device plugged in, hit the Jailbreak button to begin. If you have not yet disabled your passcode on your device, it is advised that you do so. Head to Settings > General > Passcode to disable it.
Evasi0n will begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.
Your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will now reboot.
You will be walked through a process of tapping the Jailbreak icon. Tap it only once! Your device will reboot once more.
Your device is now jailbroken running iOS 6 with Cydia.
You can now re-enable your passcode for your device. Youre all done.

Q: Okay my device is "jailbroken", where are all the goods?!
A: Lets download a couple starter apps, go to Cydia and click "Themes". Search for a free one, and download it. Now Cydia will install another application called "Winterboard". Go there to enable your themes and its features. Next we are going to download an application called "springtomize". this lets you change multiple features of your device through one application, such as the carrier name, "slide to unlock text" and more. Now while in Cydia, go to manage, then sources, then tap edit at the top, and click the "+" now add this -> cydia.xsellize.com/ <-. Search for the application called springtomize. Download it, and have fun with your device....Theres much more you can do...

Q: How do i get free apps ?
A: Read my thread here Forums/t=4895209/how-to-get-free-...-apps.html

Top Cydia Tweaks/Apps

BrightVol
BrightVol is a jailbreak tweak that allows users to adjust the brightness by using only a simple activator action.Although it may look like just another brightness tweak, BrightVol offers unique features which stand out from the rest. First of all, BrightVol allows you to easily switch between changing the volume and the brightness of your device. Simply press both volume buttons simultaneously and it lets you change the brightness repeating the process again will revert it back to changing the devices volume. Also, if youre one of the forgetful type, BrightVol will automatically switch back its settings after it is left untouched for at least30 seconds on the brightness setting.

Monocle
While this tweak is coming from well-known developer Ryan Petrich, it hasnt been brought to the full attention of the jailbreak community. Monocle essentially allows an app to run infullscreenwhenever you perform the action ofshaking your device. It almost provides similar functionality to Safaris fullscreen mode found on iOS 6. A good thing to note is that it is Activator-friendly, so having to shakeyour device isnt the only option to allow an app to runin fullscreen. Compatibility can potentially be limited, so apps such as Cydia itself may not be compatible.

SwipeSelection
SwipeSelection is a useful little tweak that makes editing on your iPhone or iPad easy with the use of simple gestures. Instead of traditionally tapping your fingers to adjust any typos, you cansimply swipe your fingeron the keyboard and it moves the cursor until you stop. Alternatively, you can swipe with two fingers to increase the scroll speed of the cursor. Even though this particular tweak was inspired by a popular iOS concept, it hasnt really been highly appreciated amongst the community.

Clockify
Clockify is a tweak that provides customization by displaying the Clock.app UI on the lockscreen, enabling a real-time animation to the SpringBoard, and by having access to a clock widget in Notification center. If you go to the Settings panel, you can find even more customization options to enable or disable certain parts of the tweak. For example, you can enable a world clock to appear on the homescreen. If you want even more, you can combine this with Dashboard X and add a visual clock widget on your SpringBoard as well. It may not provide the most interesting or unexpected features, but it is one of the best integrated and supported tweaks available on Cydia, and therefore deserves to be mentioned.

FoldMusic
FoldMusic is exceptional in that is one of the most elegant and simple tweaks that has made its way to Cydia. This particular tweak allows you to do one simple task: create a folder on your homescreenbased on playlists and albums. By simply going to FoldMusics settings, you can tap on the Add button, select your preferred album or custom playlist, and voila! it will automatically create a folder with your selected music in it! It also offers options to add your albums artwork as the folder preview and to rename the folder, for extra customizability.

AutoProtect
When I first saw this tweak become available, I recognized the word protect in the title, and knew that I would find this very useful. To my surprise, it was not much later that my aunt had lost her iPhone, luckily with her password enabled. I was relieved when I found out that it was password protected, but I thought that it was a bit of a nuisance having to manually input her password. Enter, AutoProtect. This tweak allows you have your password loaded onto your device, without the hassle of manually putting it in. When youre connected to a known WiFi, your password becomes overwritten and loads it back up when you are out of range.

AquaBoard
AquaBoard is a tweak that was very well implemented, almost making it feel native to iOS. Simply put, AquaBoard allows you to have water-like effects on your devices homescreen. Under Settings.app there are many options of which the end user can apply to provide a different style and feel to AquaBoards effect. For example, you can adjust the frame rate of the water ripples with each touch, or you can set it to an ambient rain mode, where your device will appear to be as if it was getting hit by virtual rain.

AnyLockApp
AnyLockApp changes the lockscreen camera shortcut to open any of your apps! Changing the app shortcut on the lockscreen is its only function, but that doesnt mean it is not a great tweak. AnyLockApp is quite useful if you have an app that you would like immediate access to. So, viewing a picture, selecting your favorite song, or even doing a quick Google search just got even faster. For those of you set with a passcode, you will still be required to enter it before the app is launched.

F.lux
When f.lux was initially released, it received very little attention on the iFans forums. F.lux simply warms up your screen to match your lighting at night, which of course, means drastic reduce in eye strain and discomfort. Moreover, f.lux was released with the intention of eliminating blue light from your device which affects the quality of your sleep. I personally find it a pleasing experience to use my device with this tweak installed, as it makes the screen easier on my eyes at night. So if you ever find yourself squinting at your device due to its blue-ish brightness, check out f.lux.

MultiStorey
If you are a power user who switches between apps constantly and hate the fact that you can only view up to 4 of your recent apps, then MultisStorey may be for you. MultiStorey doubles the amount of apps that can be shown in your multitasking bar, allowing you to view up to 8 of your recently opened apps. While MultiStorey doesnt strictly reinvent the app switcher as Auxo, it does, however, speed up your day-to-day tasks.

Reminders+
First off, Reminders+ is a tweak that adds functionality to the native Reminders app by allowing users to have permanent reminders on their lock screen. While its not a complete overhaul or a major feature, Reminders+ does best at doing its primary function, reminding people ahead of time. With Reminders+, you can always have that one, or two, important reminders without it ever disappearing from your lock screen. Along with your reminder, it also has the ability to finally display your written note. Now, this is something that Apple should have implemented a long time ago.

WrapAround
If youre looking to make iOS a little more similar to Android, then WrapAround may be just for you. WrapAround allows your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to infinitely scroll around your SpringBoard pages. No, this isnt a tweak that allows you to have more than the restricted 11 home screen pages that Apple imposes, but, as the developer says, just scroll to the last page of icons, keep scrolling, and youre back to the search! I literally had never heard of this tweak until reading upon this thread. As a side note, it would work perfectly well if Spotlight search was removed.

Vexillum
Vexillum offers more customization to Apples notification system by providing a variety of colors and gradients. Sure, it may not be the first of its kind, but it is a tweak well worth noting. This tweak in particular lets you customize almost everything found in the banner notifications, such as the banner, font and border color. With options such color sliders and gradient settings, it is a simple tweak that is quite stable and well implemented. Now, you can give your notifications a little more personalized look.

MiniBanners Pro
MiniBanners Pro completely changes the notification system. As its name suggests, this tweak shrinks any incoming notifications into just the apps icon and number of notifications missed. Alongside this, this tweak supplies its own animations and hefty set of features, which completely changes the way we handle notifications. Features such as the placement of notifications, tap-to-expand, auto-expand, manual dismiss, swipe-to-dismiss, and more makes this tweak hard to ignore.

Jepit
And to conclude this weeks Unmentioned series of Cydia tweaks, comes Jepit. This tweak allows you to modify the app switchers animations when switching from app to app. This tweak does provide a great deal of customization, such as bringing numerous effects to the multitasking bar and having the privilege of modifying apps appearances in this view. I remember hearing a great deal about this tweak in the past, but I have since long heard any news of it. I definitely recommend this tweak to anyone with a jailbroken device, as it provides a fresher look to iOS.

SwipeBack
SwipeBack is a jailbreak tweak that does nothing more than provide a simple gesture in returning to a previous page by swiping your finger on either side of your device. Rather than having to press the back button of every app, you now have the option of swiping the app, making the process feel a bit more native. Also, another bonus feature of this tweak is that it will let you go back a page on Safari making it more convenient to browse the web. If you find this feature annoying, dont worry as you can disable this on the settings.

ColoredKnob
If you are in the process of looking into a little more customization, then perhaps take a look at ColoredKnob. ColoredKnob is a jailbreak tweak that allows you to simply change the appearance of the slider on the lockscreen. For the time being, it lets you change the slider to 9 solid colors and 1 unique lock slider. Other options include having the ability to make the slider longer, which only increases the size by about 10%. The tweak also brings the ability of randomizing the color every time you lock and unlock your device. Even though the tweak is quite simple, it definitely feels native to iOS and is well worth downloading!

Color Keyboard
What if you had the opportunity to change the color and style of your keyboard with ease? That is exactly what Color Keyboard aims to do! This tweak allows you to change not only the color of your keyboard, but the style as well! As seen from above, there are themes which depict a Windows Phone 7 style keyboard and a MacBook Air keyboard. Initially, when you download this, it will come with a plethora of themes for you to choose from, ranging from solid colors to textured ones as well. Not only this, it also has a theme gallery section where you will be able to download more of the communitys greatest work. This is a must have if you plan to show your customized jailbroken device!

Accelerate
Accelerate, the predecessor to ClockWind, makes a return to iOS 6 which accelerates core iOS animations. This tweak can be considered a fake enhancement to iOS, which deceives its users into believing that it speeds up their device. Over on the settings panel, it includes the options to slow down, speed up, and disable the tweak in certain animation elements of iOS. This tweak certainly made me feel as if my device was faster than the iPhone 5!

Activoice
Ryan Petrich, a well-respected jailbreak developer, no doubt develops some of the most quality tweaks out there. Most known for Activator and other tweaks, Ryan Petrich has developed another tweak named Activoice. With Activoice, any device can have the functionality of bringing up Googles own voice search assisstant, Google Now, with a simple activator action. With Google Now, you are able to speak your text and search the web with ease making this tweak invaluable. You can think of Googles assistant as a Siri alternative and rival.

I will try my best to keep this up to date ! It took a LONG time to make this thread, yes some stuff was copied but it still took time. If anybody has any more q/a , pm them to me and i will add it to this thread and add your name saying the question was asked by you. Hope this helps somebody.

Is it possible to "brick" a device that you jail broke? And if it is, is it reversible?

im not so sure about that to be honest, every device i've had a problem with, i was able to recover it, so it may be a soft brick and not a hard brick
