The iPhone 5 has a larger screen than previous versions, at 4 inches, with a resolution of 1,136 x 640 or 326 pixels per inch which is still a retina display, as Apple defines it. The larger screen has lengthened the phone overall, but it also allows for a total of six rows of apps on the screen five rows on the pages along with the permanent single row along the bottom.

The phone, which is said to be made entirely of glass and aluminum, is also thinner overall. Its just 7.6 mm thin, 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S. It also weighs 112 grams, 20% lighter than the 4S.

The wait for the iPhone 5 has been long. Rumors about a redesigned iPhone have circulated since shortly after the release of the iPhone 4 in 2010. As Android phones have pushed screen sizes upward and began sporting novel features like LTE and improved cameras, many predicted Apple would respond in kind.

For Apple, the response couldnt come soon enough. Sales of the iPhone fell off a cliff last quarter, dropping from 35.1 million to 26 million. The release of the iPhone 5 should move the needle back up, and some analysts are predicting Apple will sell 10 million units in just the first three weeks.

New iPhone Is 18% Thinner Than Previous Models [REPORT]

It looks like the next-generation Apple smartphone will be much slimmer than its predecessors, according to newly surfaced pictures.

Cell phone repair company iResQ.com which said it has been receiving the screen assembly, back casing and other parts for the new iPhone posted pictures of the latest model up against the iPhone 4S, and its clear that the latest device is slightly thinner. In fact, its about 18% more svelte.

The new iPhone (pictured left) appears to be about 7.6 mm thick, compared to the iPhone 4S at 9.3 mm. It also seems to be slimmer by the thickness of the back panel of glass.

Its also evident that the iPhone 5 is significantly taller than the iPhone 4S and 4, which is also in line with rumors circulating the web. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
