I just got my first rep but i dont know what its for could someone explain?

I think the higher it is the more you have been on the site and the better your reputation with the site is. Hence, the name Rep. Anyway I think you can rep other people and it increases their rep by however much rep you have. So it's basically a way to increase other people's rep that help the community and such. I think. I may be wrong.
